Senior defender Elisabeth D'Amelio (Lincoln, R.I.) scored her first collegiate goal early in the first overtime period to lift Ohio Wesleyan to a non-conference win over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
D'Amelio fired a 15-yard shot over President keeper Morgan Kinyon and into the goal at the 1:15 mark of the extra session.
Ohio Wesleyan junior Kenzie Howell (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) had kept the game scoreless with 7 first-half saves, most notably stopping a shot by W&J's Hayley Skovira at the left post in the 21st minute, and then breaking up a breakaway by W&J's Tatiana Ruzzini in the 27th minute.
The Bishops took the lead in the 37th minute when senior forward Sam Weeks (Manchester, Vt./Burr and Burton Academy) fired a shot that President keeper Morgan Kinyon stopped, but freshman forward Brooke Zinader (Delaware/Hayes) was there to tuck the rebound into the W&J goal.
W&J evened the game with 34:00 left in regulation time when Jess Skovira made a long run and sent a shot over Howell and into the Bishop goal.
Both teams had chances in the waning moments of regulation. Hayley Skovira got off a shot from the middle of the box that Howell saved with 4:22 remaining.
Just over a minute later Weeks had a look from the right side, but her shot was saved at the right post by Kinyon. Kinyon also deflected a shot by senior forward Lindsay Reed (Dublin/Jerome) with :44 to play.
The Bishops had one more chance when the Presidents were called for a foul in the penalty area with :32 left, but senior forward Kristie Prendergast (Westlake) sent her penalty kick outside the right post, and the game headed into overtime.
Washington & Jefferson outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 26-19. Howell finished with 12 saves for the Bishops. Kinyon recorded 11 saves for the Presidents.
