Junior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored Ohio Wesleyan's first 2 goals to start the 16th-ranked Battling Bishops on their way to a win over Milwaukee School of Engineering in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Ohio Wesleyan advances to the second round to play top-ranked Calvin, a 1-0 winner over Mount Aloysius (Pa.) in Friday's other first-round contest.  The Ohio Wesleyan-Calvin game is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.  Ticket prices will be $8 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens, and $3 for children under 5.  There will be no re-entry, and no containers are permitted.  The winner of Saturday's second-round game will advance to the third round and quarterfinals, to be played on Nov. 20-21 or Nov. 21-22 on the campus of one of the competing institutions.

The Bishops took the lead just under 5 minutes into the game.  Senior forward Matt Cohen (Cincinnati/Seven Hills) crossed the ball from the left end line and Raider keeper Sean Stelter came off his line to grab the pass but could not control the ball, and Baum was right there to pounce on the loose ball and bury a shot from close range.

MSOE had a look at the tying goal, but Gregory Borsari's header off a free kick was tracked down by junior goalkeeper Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) in the 25th minute.

Ohio Wesleyan nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute when freshman forward Will Sharer (Avon) slotted a pass to Baum, but his shot skipped wide of the right post.

Baum came through on his next chance, however.  After a Raider punt, senior midfielder Ricardo Balmaceda (Houston, Texas/The Village School) sent the ball to senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), who played it on to Baum.  Baum made a run toward the MSOE goal and fired a shot from the top of the box, with the ball bouncing off the left post and across into the right side of the Raider goal with 14:39 left in the first half.

The Raiders pulled within 2-1 in the second half when Trevor Cwiok won the ball and sent it forward.  Cwiok's pass glanced off a Bishop defender and Braden Andryk picked up the loose ball, made a run into the penalty area, and sent a shot from the left side across and inside the right post in the 59th minute.

Midway through the half, MSOE came close to tying the game, crossing the ball from the left side to the right post, but Jerry Rubio's shot was saved by Farynowski.

MSOE had another look in the 74th minute when Logan Andryk sent a drive that Farynowski tipped over the crossbar.

Ohio Wesleyan got some insurance in the 87th minute when Sharer centered the ball to Balmaceda, who shot over Raider keeper Jeff Clements and into the MSOE goal.

"This was a good win," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "(Kyle) Baum and (Will) Sharer were very, very good tonight.  I thought we showed a lot of composure when they scored to make it 2-1.  We talked all week about managing the game, and the guys did a good job doing that.

"Baum was terrific, and Sharer, for a freshman in his first NCAA game, was very good.  It should be a good one tomorrow."

Milwaukee School of Engineering outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 11-10.  Farynowski finished with 5 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Stelter and Clements combined for 1 save in the Raider goal.

In Friday's second game, Calvin took the lead in the second minute and went on to take the victory.

The Knights went up, 1-0, after a corner kick.  Mitch Stark sent the ball into the penalty area, and Taylor Pruis headed it over to the left post, where Jay Noyola was waiting and tucked the ball inside the post just 1:58 into the contest.

Calvin would enjoy the edge in offensive play during the remainder of the half, outshooting Mount Aloysius, 11-0, during the period, but the scrappy Mounties kept the game close.

Mountie goalkeeper Justin Hann turned in a memorable second half, keeping Mount Aloysius in the game with a handful of acrobatic saves.  In the 52nd minute, Hann made a fine play to deny a shot by Calvin's Stephan Hooker.  Hann made a diving save on a shot by Pruis in the 55th minute, and the highlight of Hann's evening may have been the back-to-back saves he made on Pruis shots just the blink of an eye apart in the 85th minute.

Calvin outshot Mount Aloysius, 32-4.  Niko Giantsopoulos had 1 save for the Knights.  Hann stopped 15 shots in the Mountie goal.
