Men's Soccer Defeats Spalding

Sophomore midfielder David Robinett (Cincinnati/Indian Hill), senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.), and senior midfielder Ricardo Balmaceda (Houston, Texas/The Village School) scored first-half goals as fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan built a 3-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat Spalding in the first round of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre College on Friday in Danville, Ky.

Ohio Wesleyan will face Centre at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in the tournament's second round.

The Bishops took the lead in the eighth minute when Robinett scored off a rebound.

Schaefer scored what proved to the deciding goal in the 19th minute, with freshman back Luke Gabbert (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) credited with an assist on the play.

Balmaceda made it 3-0 with a goal in the 38th minute, with senior midfielder Stephen Coldren (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) assisting on the score.

The Bishops threatened to break the game open early in the second half, with Robinett, junior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), and Schaefer testing Golden Eagle keeper Logan Spencer during the first 10-plus minutes of the period, but Spencer recorded the save each time.

Spalding averted the shutout when Jacob McMurry scored in the 71st minute.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Spalding, 17-15.  Junior Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) stopped 4 shots in the Bishop goal.  Spencer finished with 7 saves in the Spalding goal.
