Box Score Ohio Wesleyan 1, Centre 1Senior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) scored to erase a 1-0 deficit, but fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan and Centre played to a tie in the second round of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre College on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Ohio Wesleyan enjoyed a 10-2 edge in shots during the first half, but the Bishops were not able to find the back of the Colonel net. Junior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), senior midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange), and senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) put shots on goal during the first 20 minutes of the contest, but Centre keeper Bailey Spade made the save each time.
Junior Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) was just as sharp in the Ohio Wesleyan goal, stopping a drive by Alexander Garuba midway through the first half, then tracking down a header by Ian Williams early in the second half.
The Colonels took the lead in the 54th minute on a goal by Garuba, with Christian Gateskill credited with an assist on the play.
Barnes answered for the Bishops in the 61st minute, assisted by Bloecher.
Ohio Wesleyan had looks at the go-ahead score, but senior forward Matt Cohen (Cincinnati/Seven Hills) had a shot saved in the 68th minute, and freshman forward Will Sharer (Avon) met a similar fate in the 79th minute.
Farynowski preserved the tie as well, making saves on shots by Gateskill in the 78th minute and by John Herd in the 82nd minute.
Neither team put a shot on goal during the first overtime period, and Farynowski kept the game going with a save on a shot by Noah Wesley-Chevalier in the 109th minute.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Centre, 23-11. Farynowski finished with 5 saves in the Bishop goal. Spade had 9 saves for Centre.
