Box Score Ohio Wesleyan 1, Denison 1Senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) scored to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, and Ohio Wesleyan and ninth-ranked Denison went on to play to a deadlock in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday in Granville.
Ohio Wesleyan had the first chances of the game, first in the 11th minute when a shot by junior back Nick Norman (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) was stopped by Denison keeper Blake Schach, and then in the 17th minute when junior midfielder Neil Wilson (Batavia) crossed the ball to Schaefer, whose shot sailed over the crossbar.
Denison took the lead in the 22nd minute when a shot by Kennedy Kommor was blocked by the Bishop defense, but the ball went to the Big Red's Karch Majetnyi, who settled it and scored.
Senior midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) had a look in the 30th minute, but Schach was there for the save.
Just over a minute later, junior goalkeeper Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) saved a header by Denison's Will Kendall, keeping the Bishops within 1-0.
Freshman forward Will Sharer (Avon) had a good look at the tying goal early in the second half, but his shot was blocked by Big Red defender Jasdeep Khaira.
Farynowski kept the Bishops close with a couple of saves, first diving to deny a shot by Will Kendall in the 55th minute, then snaring a shot by Luis Zamora after the ensuing corner kick.
The Denison defense preserved the lead again in the 59th minute when Big Red back Jordan Williams cleared a Wilson shot off the line.
Sophomore defender Trey Olsen (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) nearly evened the game in the 76th minute, putting a free kick from the center line on goal and forcing Schach to make a leaping save.
The Bishops evened the game in the 77th minute after freshman back Luke Gabbert (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) sent a corner kick to Schaefer, with Scheafer getting free and scoring into the left corner.
Denison had a chance at the go-ahead score in the 80th minute when Kendall got free on a breakaway but sent his shot over the goal.
Schaefer had a chance nearly a minute later, but Schach made the save.
Freshman midfielder Jack Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) had the Bishops' best chance of the first overtime, but his shot was stopped by Schach in the 95th minute.
Denison's Jake Girardot had the best look during the second overtime, but Farynowski tracked down his header shot in the 106th minute to keep the game going.
Denison outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 18-17. Farynowski finished with 5 saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Schach recorded 6 saves for the Big Red.
