Ohio Wesleyan 5, Capital 0

Senior back Evan Lee (Toledo/St. John's) had a hand in Ohio Wesleyan's first 3 goals as the Bishops built a 3-0 halftime lead and went on to post a non-conference win over Capital on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Scoring chances were hard to come by during the opening minutes of the game.  Ohio Wesleyan earned 3 corner kicks during the first 7-plus minutes of action but could not parlay those into shots on the Crusader net.

The Bishops took advantage of their first dangerous chance, earning a restart just outside the Capital penalty area.  Senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) sent the ball into the box, and Lee headed it inside the right post for a 1-0 Bishop lead in the 16th minute.

Senior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, making a run up the middle and dishing off to Lee at the top of the penalty area, then taking the return pass from Lee and finding the back of the Crusader net.

Two minutes later, senior midfielder Gunnar Bloecher (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) sent the ball across the field to Lee on the left side, and Lee fed freshman midfielder Jack Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) for a goal that gave the Bishops a 3-0 advantage.

Early in the second half, junior back Nick Norman (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) made a run into the Capital penalty area and was fouled.  Schaefer stepped up to take the penalty kick, and made the shot for a 4-0 lead.

The Bishop defense preserved the shutout in the 59th minute.  Capital had a restart from about 22 yards away from the Bishop goal, and Jacob Pulliam's shot bounced inside the box and then hit the right post.  Hunter Stiger got to the rebound, but his shot was cleared off the line by Barnes.

Freshman back Phil Foisie (Westport, Conn./Staples) wrapped up the evening's scoring in the 73rd minute, making a run into the Capital area and working past a pair of defenders before finding paydirt.

"It was good to get some guys back," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "Kyle (Baum) and Mason (Hoge) were back (tonight), and that made a real big difference.  Now we have some flexibility and a little more depth going into conference play.

"Evan (Lee) played really well, Brian (Schaefer) played really well, and Lonnie (Barnes) and Phoenix (Neitzelt) did well in the middle.  We're starting to get it back."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Capital, 23-7.  Junior goalkeeper Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) made 1 save in recording the shutout for Ohio Wesleyan.  Justin Niswonger and Trevor Funk combined for 1 save in the Crusader goal.
