Albion 3, Capital 2Junior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored less than 2 minutes into overtime to give fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a win over Kalamazoo in the first round of the annual Fred Myers-adidas Invitational on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Saturday's first game saw Albion's Bobby Budlong score midway through the first overtime period to give the Britons a win over Capital.
In Sunday's second round, Ohio Wesleyan will host Albion at 4 p.m. at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex, while Capital will host Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. at Capital University in Columbus.
Baum's game-winner came on a shot from the right side of the box 99 seconds into the overtime period.
Ohio Wesleyan had taken the lead in the 16th minute when junior midfielder Phoenix Neitzelt (Delaware/Hayes) blasted a one-time shot off a deflection from outside the penalty area.
The Hornets evened the game with 15:00 left in the first half when the ball was deflected into the box and Jordan Veillette connected on a shot from the left side.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) kept the game tied, making 3 saves in a span of 6 minutes early in the second half.
Ohio Wesleyan had chances by freshman forward Lucas Farmer (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) in the 72nd minute and senior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) in the 88th minute, but both were stopped by Kalamazoo keeper Griffin Hamel.
Kalmazoo outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 19-14. Farynowski finished with 9 saves, while Hamel recorded 6 saves in the Hornet goal.
In the opener, Budlong's game-winner completed a hat trick. He had scored with :33 left in the first half to put the Britons on the board, then added a goal in the 58th minute for a 2-0 Albion lead.
Capital rallied with a goal by Daniel Smithberger in the 77th minute, and then during a frantic last-minute rally, the Crusaders were awarded a penalty kick with :15 left in regulation time, with Cheyn Roux converting the kick to send the game into overtime.
The Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Delaware County, has been one of the featured events on the Battling Bishops' schedule for 38 seasons. It honors the memory of Fred Myers, longtime soccer and lacrosse coach at Ohio Wesleyan.
