2017 Battling Bishop Men's Soccer Schedule Released

3/2/2017 1:45:00 PM

The Ohio Wesleyan men's soccer team has finalized its 2017 schedule, with the Battling Bishops facing another typically rugged path.

The schedule features 6 opponents that played in the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament, highlighted by matchups against national runner-up Calvin (Mich.) and national semifinalist St. Thomas (Minn.)

"We are happy with how this schedule came together," said Ohio Wesleyan head coach Jay Martin.  "Once again, we are playing some of the best teams our region and country have to offer.  We return a good amount of experience from last season and are motivated to compete against this challenging slate of opponents."

Ohio Wesleyan begins its season in the Cal Bergsma Memorial tournament against Calvin, which fell in double overtime in the 2016 national championship game.  Last year, the Bishops defeated the Knights by a 2-1 score at Ohio Wesleyan's Jay Martin Soccer Complex.  In the Cal Bergsma tournament's second game, Ohio Wesleyan will face perennial power Hope College.

The Bishops open their home schedule with the Fred Myers-adidas® Invitational the following weekend, welcoming Millikin (Ill.) and St. Thomas to Delaware.  UST finished 20-2-3 on the way to the 2016 national semifinals.

Following the Fred Myers-adidas® Invitational, Ohio Wesleyan hits the road for games against traditional regional foes Ohio Northern and John Carroll, both 2016 NCAA Division III tournament teams, before returning home for a mid-week matchup with another regional opponent in Case Western Reserve.  A home game against Capital and a game at Thomas More (Ky.) lead into the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule.  The NCAC has placed 3 teams in the NCAA tournament in 3 of the last 4 seasons, including both 2015 and 2016.
