Wabash 7, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Wabash's Jake Reid found Matt Penola on a 6-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give the Little Giants the lead, and that would turn out to be the only score of the game in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
On the opening possession of the game, Wabash's Alex Marr had a punt go off the side of his foot and Ohio Wesleyan took over on the Wabash 49-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-1 call from the Wabash 40, the Bishops went for the first down, but junior quarterback Jax Harville (Marion/River Valley) was taken down for a 2-yard loss, giving the visitors the ball on their own 42.
From there, Reid hit Penola for gains of 5 and 10 yards before finding tight end Ivan Martinex for 25 yards and a first down at the Ohio Wesleyan 13. After Ra'Shawn Jones picked up 7 yards, Reid went back to Penola on the right side for the final 6 yards and a touchdown.
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a drive, getting a 10-yard gain from freshman running back Martin Sesma (San Diego, Calif./Sweetwater) and a 9-yard run from junior wide receiver Mher Tcholakian (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) on the first 2 plays before Harville connected with freshman wide receiver Kenny Streb (Willowick/Eastlake North) for 33 yards and a first down at the Wabash 22. Sophomore running back Trey Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) moved the chains with a 5-yard gain on third-and-1 from the Wabash 13, but a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 18, and on second down, Harville's pass into the end zone was intercepted by Jose Franco.
The Bishops turned aside one Wabash threat in the second quarter after 4 consecutive runs by Isaac Avant gained 35 yards and a first down at the Wabash 32. Reid completed a pass to Nikko Morris at the Ohio Wesleyan 14-yard line, but sophomore linebacker Cody Streit (Griffin, Ga.) forced a fumble and the Bishops recovered at the OWU 8.
Later in the quarter, a 34-yard punt return by Kyle Stroh set the Little Giants up at the Ohio Wesleyan 34, but the Bishop defense held for 3 plays, and on fourth down, senior cornerback Sterling O'Hara (New Canaan, Conn.) got a hand on a 50-yard field goal attempt by Schuyler Nehrig to keep the game at 7-0.
Ohio Wesleyan closed out the third quarter by starting another march, with Harville finding senior wide receiver Deji Adebiyi (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) for 27 yards on a third-and-18 call, then picking up another first down with a completion to junior wide receiver Sasoun Tcholakian (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington). On third-and-6 from the Wabash 21, Harville hit junior wide receiver Justin Lowry (Litchfield/Buckeye) for 5 yards, and on fourth-and-1, Sesma was stopped short of the line to gain to turn the ball over on downs.
O'Hara intercepted a Reid pass at the OWU 38 to give the Bishops another chance, and a personal foul and a 16-yard strike from Harville to Adebiyi gave Ohio Wesleyan a first down at the Wabash 31, but the drive stalled there and Harville's pass to Sesma on fourth-and-8 from the Wabash 29 fell incomplete.
The Bishops had one more opportunity after Marr bobbled the snap on a punt and was brought down at the Wabash 30-yard line with 1:49 left in regulation time. On third down, Harville hit Adebiyi for 8 yards to set up fourth-and-2 from the Wabash 22, but Harville's fourth-down pass was incomplete.
Harville completed 14 of 31 passes for 132 yards. Adebiyi led the Bishops with 6 catches for 71 yards. Sesma led Bishop rushers with 32 yards on 14 carries.
Senior cornerback Natrone Barnes (Deerfield Beach, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), sophomore defensive end Kor'Darius Melton (Warner Robins, Ga./Houston County), and senior nose guard Chicho Rodriguez (San Clemente, Calif.) had 8 tackles apiece for Ohio Wesleyan, with Barnes added a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.
Reid completed 15 of 26 throws for 115 yards for Wabash. Avant caught 4 passes for 14 yards and led the Little Giants with 83 yards on 21 rushes. Brock Heffron had 10 stops for Wabash, including a sack and 2 for loss.
