Junior midfielder Adam Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) and junior back Charles Branche III (Washington, D.C./Landon (Md.) School) scored goals for Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops defeated Wabash in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Senior midfielder Jack Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) had the first look at the Wabash net, putting a shot on goal less than a minute into the game, but Wabash keeper Chad Wunderlich made the stop.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened often in the early going, picking up a pair of corners in the first 8 minutes. On the second, junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) sent a line drive toward the goal that Wunderlich batted away. Romanelli ended up with another look but sent his shot over the goal.
Wabash had a chance to take the lead in the 10th minute when Jacques Boulais picked up a loose ball after a Bishop defensive miscue, but his shot was stopped by junior goalkeeper J.P. Baughman (Westerville/Columbus St. Francis DeSales).
Freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) teed up a shot in the 11th minute, but Wunderlich again was there for the save.
Yingling gave the Bishops the lead in the 16th minute, settling the ball from the left side and putting a shot into the right side of the Little Giant goal.
Branche added to the Ohio Wesleyan lead early in the second half, redirecting a Gomez centering pass inside the right post in the 49th minute.
Ohio Wesleyan kept up the offensive pressure, picking up 7 corner kicks during the next 18 minutes. Yingling had a pair of shots saved by Wunderlich, who also stopped shots by Romanelli and senior midfielder Will Sharer (Avon).
"This was our best 90 minutes of the year," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "This will be good for us going forward to our last four games. Antonio (Romanelli) played well, and Hector (Gomez) played well."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wabash, 24-5. Baughman made 1 save while finishing with his fourth consecutive shutout. Wunderlich stopped 9 saves for the Little Giants.
