Junior back Charles Branche III (Washington, D.C./Landon (Md.) School) staked the Bishops to an early lead, and junior goalkeeper J.P. Baughman (Westerville/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) posted his fifth shutout of the month as 22nd/25th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan extended its unbeaten string to 10 games with a North Coast Athletic Conference decision over Hiram on Saturday in Hiram.
Junior midfielder Adam Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) had the first good scoring chance of the day, but Terrier keeper C.J. Keith made the save in the ninth minute.
Hiram earned a corner kick just over 2 minutes later, but Richard Milford sent his shot over the goal.
The Bishops took the lead in the 12th minute when senior back Jack Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) sent the ball ahead to Branche, who headed it home.
Midway through the first half, Keith would turn aside a shot by sophomore forward Ben Sobotka (Dublin/Jerome).
Ohio Wesleyan would earn a pair of corner kicks late in the half, but shots by sophomore midfielder Ryan Huelsman (Powell/Columbus St. Charles) and Branche were blocked.
Baughman made a save on a Giovanni Meza shot in the 60th minute to protect the lead. The Bishops countered, and freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) scored just 26 seconds later to increase the margin to 2-0.
Freshman forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek) provided some insurance with a goal in the final minute. Junior back Brady Whittekind (Hilliard/Bradley) was credited with an assist on the play.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Hiram, 17-8. Baughman finished with 3 saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Keith had 2 saves for the Terriers.
