Freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon/Jackson) scored 13 points and freshman post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) added 12 points as Ohio Wesleyan built a halftime lead, but Chicago rallied for a win over the Bishops in the championship game of the Midway Classic, hosted by the University of Chicago on Sunday in Chicago.
Carlson drilled a 3-pointer to break a 21-21 tie, and after a lay-in by junior guard Tristin Tillman (Bellefontaine), Stanislawski sank back-to-back 3-pointers. Tillman followed with a jumper that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 34-24 lead wth 7:26 left in the first half. A Stanislawski lay-in gave the Bishops their biggest lead at 41-28 with 3:52 to play.
The Maroons came back with a pair of 3-pointers by Jordan Baum, and a Dominic Laravie jumper brought the hosts within 43-36, and the half would end with the Bishops up by 7.
Freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) opened the second half with a trifecta that pushed the Bishop lead back into double figures, but Chicago answered with a 15-2 run that included a pair of buckets by Justin Jackson and 3-pointers from Baum and Noah Karras. Ryan Jacobsen's lay-in evened the game at 51, and Brennan McDaniel followed with a 3-pointer to give Chicago a 54-51 lead with 14:08 left in regulation time.
Baskets by junior post Tim Kiefer (North Olmsted/Cleveland St. Ignatius) and Stanislawski gave the lead back to the Bishops, and Ohio Wesleyan still led, 64-63, after a Carlson 3-pointer with 7:59 to play, but Chicago responded with a 14-2 run, with Jackson and Jacobsen scoring 5 points apiece during that stretch. Jacobsen's lay-in capped the run and gave the Maroons a 77-66 lead with 2:56 remaining.
Carlson scored back-to-back hoops to make it a 77-70 game with exactly 2 minutes to play, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Carlson led the Bishops with 19 points. Stanislawski added 17 points, Johnson scored 11 points, and Tillman finished with 10. Junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) had a team-high 8 rebounds and Kiefer led the Bishops with 3 assists.
Karras and Baum had 20 points apiece for Chicago.
