Capital 90, Ohio Wesleyan 81
Junior guard Jaret Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) scored twice and junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) added a bucket for an early Ohio Wesleyan lead, but Capital pulled away with a 15-0 run and held off a Bishop comeback to record a win on the second night of the NCAC/OAC Challenge, hosted by Capital on Sunday in Columbus.
In Sunday's opener, Wittenberg defeated Otterbein by a score of 89-67.
Gerber sank a jumper from the lane to wipe out a 2-0 deficit, and after a lay-in by Gossard, it was Gerber with a lay-in for a 6-2 Bishop lead just over 2 minutes into the action.
Caleb Cox sank a pair of free throws and Joey Weingartner followed with a 3-pointer to give the hosts the lead at 7-6, and Cox converted a 3-point play for a 10-6 lead.
Junior guard Tristin Tillman (Bellefontaine) hit the second of 2 free throws and followed with a lay-in to bring the Bishops within 12-9 at the 15:20 mark of the first half, but the Crusaders countered by scoring the next 15 points of the game, highlighted by 7 consecutive points from Gavin Wildermuth.
Trailing, 27-9, at the midway point of the first half, the Bishops rallied to within 38-28 with the help of 3-pointers from freshman post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) and Gerber, but Capital responded with a 12-0 run that included another Cox 3-point play and another 3-pointer by Weingartner.
Ohio Wesleyan narrowed the gap to 53-44 early in the second half as Carlson and freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) connected from long range, and additional 3-pointers from Carlson and Johnson, along with a pair of hoops from freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon/Jackson), helped the Bishops pull within 55-52 with 13:46 left in regulation time.
Shortly thereafter, Stanislawski buried a jumper, then stole the ball to set up sophomore wing Dawsin Tillman (Bellefontaine) for a 3-pointer that made it a 62-60 game just past the midway point of the second half, but Capital put together another 12-0 run, with Austin Schreck contributing both a 3-pointer and a traditional 3-point play, to stretch the margin to 76-62 with 5:44 remaining.
The Bishops pulled within 86-79 on a 3-pointer by Stanislawski, but that was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.
Stanislawski led the Bishops with 16 points and 5 assists. Gossard added 15 points and shared the team lead with 7 boards, Johnson scored 13 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds, and Tristin Tillman finished with 12 points.
Cox led Capital with 25 points.
