Junior post Jake Hecker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) connected on a 3-pointer that brought Ohio Wesleyan within 7 points, but 14th-ranked Wooster went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win in the first round of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic on Saturday in Wooster.
Ohio Wesleyan will face Thiel at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the second round of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic.
The Fighting Scots opened the game with a 9-0 run that included a lay-in and a 3-pointer by Eric Bulic.
Junior post Derrick Wyche (Lewis Center/Olentangy) sank a lay-in to put the Bishops on the scoreboard, and Ohio Weseyan was still within 21-14 after a Hecker's 3-pointer midway through the first half.
Reece Dupler scored 6 consecutive points as Wooster moved the lead back into double digits at 27-14 with 6:30 left in the period.
Ohio Wesleyan fought back, pulling within 31-21 on a 3-pointer by junior guard Jaret Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) with 4:00 left in the first half, but the Fighting Scots ended the half with an 8-1 burst that included a lay-in and a 3-pointer by Danyon Hempy.
Gerber drove for a lay-in and junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) scored twice during a 6-0 Bishop run to open the second half, and Ohio Wesleyan pared the deficit to 50-40 on Hecker's lay-in midway through the period, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Gossard and Hecker had 10 points apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.
Dupler led Wooster with 18 points.
