Freshman post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) sparked a pair of Ohio Wesleyan runs as the Bishops defeated Thiel on the second day of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic on Sunday in Wooster.
It was a one-possession game until freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massillon/Jackson) knocked down the second of consecutive 3-pointers to give the Bishops an 18-13 lead at the 13:28 mark of the first half.
The Tomcats were still within 22-18 after Anthony Byrd hit 3 free throws with 11:14 remaining, but Ohio Wesleyan responded with an 11-2 run that included 3-pointers by freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) and Carlson, a Stanislawski steal-and-lay-in, and another Carlson 3-pointer.
Ohio Wesleyan scored the final 8 points of the first half, collecting baskets from Stanislawski, sophomore post Grant Smith (Columbus/Bishop Hartley), junior guard Tristin Tillman (Bellefontaine), and sophomore post Jeffrey Hudson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) to extend the lead to 53-35 at the break.
Carlson added consecutive baskets to cap a 6-0 burst early in the second half that stretched the margin to 59-37, and the Bishop lead would remain in double digits through the remainder of the contest.
Stanislawski led the Bishops with 25 pionts. Carlson finished with 17 points, and Johnson, junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange), and junior post Jake Hecker (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) added 11 points apiece.
Stanislawski represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team.
Ahmad Tejumola led Thiel with 18 points.
