Junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/St. Francis DeSales) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to give Ohio Wesleyan a win over Washington (Mo.) in the first round of the Bob Baptista Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College on Friday in Wheaton, Ill.
Ohio Wesleyan will face host Wheaton, a 5-0 winner over Benedictine in Friday's other matchup, on Saturday.
The deciding goal came with 6:33 left in regulation time, when Romanelli broke free and hit a shot from 10 yards out. Junior back Joe Brush (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) was credited with an assist on the play.
Freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) had a chance to put the Bishops ahead in the 31st minute, but his shot hit the crossbar.
Junior goalkeeper J.P. Baughman (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) kept the game scoreless with 3 saves during the early going of the second half, denying Sean Connors in the 60th minute and again less than a minute later, then stopping a header by Andrew Brunetti in the 62nd minute.
In the 64th minute, junior back Nolan Norman (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) received his second card of the contest and Ohio Wesleyan played the final 25-plus minutes down a player.
Senior midfielder Will Sharer (Avon) had a look in the 77th minute, but Bear netminder Connor Mathes was there for the save.
Washington had a few chances to even the score during the closing minutes, but Baughman stopped a shot by Sproule in the 88th minute, then saved a follow shot by Nao Yanase. Baughman sealed the win with a save of a Sproule shot with 34 seconds to play.
Washington outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 16-9. Baughman finished with 8 saves in the Bishop goal. Mathes had 3 saves for Washington.
