Joseph Schulte gave Ohio Northern an early lead and the Polar Bears went on to upset 25th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell.

The Polar Bears took the lead when Michael Bringard sent the ball out to Schulte on the right side and Schulte cut back and found the back of the net 90 seconds into the contest.

Ohio Wesleyan had a look at evening the game just over a minute later when junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/St. Francis DeSales) fielded a crossing pass on the run, but his shot went over the crossbar.

Midway through the half, junior midfielder Jarrod Ferstl (Dayton/Centerville) had a header sail over the bar, and in the 35th minute, the Bishops earned a corner kick but saw a header by freshman forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek) punched away by ONU keeper Will Velotta.

Freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) nearly tied the game early in the second half when his shot from the right side across the goal mouth glanced off the left post.

Luke Fickenworth increased the Polar Bear lead to 2-0 by heading home a corner kick from Anthony DeNoi in the 59th minute.

The Bishops threatened twice in the 78th minute, first when sophomore forward Ben Sobotka (Dublin/Jerome) chipped the ball ahead to sophomore midfielder Drew Wivell (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area), but Wivell's shot was saved at the right post.  Just 48 seconds later, Wivell sent the ball ahead to junior back Brady Whittekind (Hilliard/Bradley), but Velotta left his line and broke up the play.

Fickenworth set up Ohio Northern's final goal with a shot that junior goalkeeper J.P. Baughman (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) saved only to see ONU's Beelal Hasan there to score on the putback.

"We got our butts kicked in every possible way," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "(This was) one of the worst beatings in my coaching career.  We didn't work hard, we didn't run hard, and we didn't pass the ball.  Give them credit -- they were coming off a 9-2 loss to Calvin and they responded."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Ohio Northern, 22-14.  Baughman had 4 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, while Velotta finished with 5 saves for the Polar Bears.
