John Carroll 1, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Jarrod McDowell scored midway through the second overtime period to lift John Carroll to a win over 25th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
JCU's William Grubbs picked up the loose ball after a turnover in the defensive end and slotted a pass to McDowell, who broke in alone on junior goalkeeper J.P. Baughman (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) and sent a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
Scoring chances were scarce during the early going, with neither team able to manufacture a chance during the first 20 minutes of play. Junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/St. Francis DeSales) had the first look at the Blue Streak goal, but his 25-yard free kick sailed high.
Baughman made a fine play to keep the shutout going in the 28th minute when Jared Mattei worked free for a shot that was partially deflected before Baughman tracked down the loose ball.
Junior midfielder Jarrod Ferstl (Dayton/Centerville) drove toward the goal from the right side in the 31st minute, but Blue Streak keeper Tommy Gallina made the save. The ball went back to Ferstl, but his follow shot was high.
In the 34th minute, sophomore midfielder Ryan Huelsman (Powell/Columbus St. Charles) made a run into the penalty area from the left side and was fouled. Ohio Wesleyan was awarded a free kick from just outside the box, but a shot by sophomore midfielder Drew Wivell (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) was wide.
Romanelli put a shot on goal in the 65th minute, but Gallina was there to break up the play.
The Bishops threatened late in the first overtime period, earning a pair of corner kicks, but a header by junior back Joe Brush (Lawrenceburg, Ind./East Central) went wide. In the final minute of the period, junior back Brady Whittekind (Hilliard/Bradley) had a header go wide and Romanelli's follow shot was blocked by the Blue Streak defense.
"We played better than we did on Wednesday, but we still made too many mistakes," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "Other teams are coming out hard and defending well, and we're not up for the challenge."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot John Carroll, 17-7. Baughman had 4 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, and Gallina made 3 saves for the Blue Streaks.
