Ohio Wesleyan 2, Otterbein 1
Junior midfielder Adam Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) set up both goals as Ohio Wesleyan built a 2-0 second-half lead, and the Bishops went on to a non-conference win over Otterbein on Wednesday in Westerville.
Ohio Wesleyan had the first dangerous chance of the opening half, with junior back Brady Whittekind (Hilliard/Bradley) connecting on a header that Otterbein keeper Collin Hoffmann tracked down in the 23rd minute. Hoffmann also saved shots by senior midfielder Will Sharer (Avon) and sophomore midfielder Ryan Huelsman (Powell/Columbus St. Charles) during the next 4-plus minutes of play.
The Bishops threatened during the final minute of the half, but a shot by junior midfielder Jarrod Ferstl (Dayton/Centerville) hit the post and after a Cardinal foul, a drive by junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/St. Francis DeSales) was saved by Hoffmann.
Hoffmann made saves on shots by sophomore midfielder Matt Yingling (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) and sophomore forward Ben Sobotka (Dublin/Jerome) early in the second half to keep the shutout going.
Ohio Wesleyan earned a corner kick in the 54th minute and Adam Yingling sent the ball in to freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales), who gathered the ball in and drove a shot past Hoffman to put the Bishops on the scoreboard.
Five minutes later, the Bishops earned another corner kick and Yingling's drive into the box was headed home by junior back Charles Branche III (Washington, D.C./Landon School) to increase the margin to 2-0.
The Cardinals narrowed the deficit to 2-1 in the 80th minute as Toby Varland fielded a lead pass from Erick Juarez-Manning and scored.
The Bishop defense took over from there, allowing the Cardinals only one shot during the final 10-plus minutes of the contest, that coming in the 88th minute when a drive by Paul Hensley went high.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Otterbein, 17-8. Junior J.P. Baughman (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) and freshman Chase Agin (Blacklick/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) patrolled the goal for Ohio Wesleyan, and Hoffmann made 10 saves for the Cardinals.
