Freshman midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and junior back Brady Whittekind (Hilliard/Bradley) scored goals and the Ohio Wesleyan defense turned in an outstanding effort in a non-conference win over Capital on Wednesday in Columbus.

Junior midfielder Antonio Romanelli (Lewis Center/St. Francis DeSales) and Whittekind generated chances midway through the first half, but Crusader keeper Logan Wiedman stopped Romanelli's shot in the 28th minute and Whittekind's in the 32nd minute.

Gomez put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the 38th minute, driving a shot into the open net after Wiedman came out to play the ball.

The Ohio Wesleyan lead increased to 2-0 on an own goal in the 41st minute.

Freshman forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek) set up the Bishops' final goal after a counter, sending the ball across the box to Whittekind, who finished the chance in the 67th minute.

Meanwhile, the Bishop defense shut down the Capital offense, which had averaged nearly 4 goals per game, holding the hosts to 8 shots on the night -- none of them on goal.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Capital, 14-8.  Junior J.P. Baughman (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) was not tested in the Bishop goal, and Wiedman finished with 5 saves for the Crusaders.
