Ohio Wesleyan 98, Allegheny 84

Freshman post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored 10 points and freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) added 6 more during a 24-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay in a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Friday in Meadville, Pa.

After a scoreless first minute of play, both teams heated up from long range, with the Gators overcoming early 3-pointers from junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) and Carlson to build a 33-26 lead less than halfway through the first period.

Freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massilon/Jackson) drilled a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and junior guard Jaret Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) followed with a 3-pointer before Johnson drained 3 free throws to put the Bishops ahead, 35-33, with 8:17 left in the half.  A Carlson lay-in and a Johnson 3-pointer followed in short order, then Carlson sank a pair of free throws before a Gossard lay-in extended the lead into double figures.  Carlson added 3-pointers on consecutive Ohio Wesleyan possessions to make it 50-33 with 4:44 remaining in the half.

Brian Roberts, Jr., hit a pair of free throws to end the Gator scoreless stretch of more than 6 minutes, then sank another pair from the stripe less than a minute later.  A Jordan Rawls 3-point play and a Jordan Greynolds jumper completed a 9-0 run that brought the hosts within 50-42 at the 3:20 mark, and Allegheny would pull within 53-48 on a Caden Hinckley lay-in in the final minute of the half.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the second half with a Johnson lay-in and a Gossard 3-pointer to restore the Bishops'  double-digit lead, and a Stanislawski 3-pointer kicked off a 7-0 run that made it 79-62 with 12:17 left in regulation time.

Allegheny's Zach Ecker hit back-to-back lay-ins to spark an 8-0 burst that narrowed the deficit to 79-70 at the midway point of the second half, but that was as close as the Gators would come.  Gossard answered with a basket, Stanislawski knocked down a 3-pointer, and Gossard added a pair of free throws to push the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 86-70, and the margin would remain in double digits through the remainder of the contest.

Gossard and Johnson each finished with double-doubles, Gossard with team bests of 22 points and 13 rebounds and Johnson with 15 points and 12 boards to go along with a team-high 5 assists.  Stanislawski and Carlson finished with 21 points apiece.

Roberts led all scorers with 25 points.
