Freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massilon/Jackson) tallied 14 points during the first half as Ohio Wesleyan built a 20-point lead, then scored 6 consecutive points during the closing minutes to help the Bishops close out a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday in Oberlin.
With the Bishops leading, 8-7, Stanislawski knocked down a 3-pointer to kick off a 19-2 run. Freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) also drilled a 3-pointer and junior guard Jaret Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) connected 3 times from downtown, the last of which put Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 27-9, with 9:41 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan would lead by as many as 21 points on 3 different occasions, the last coming at 44-23 on a Stanislawski jumper with 1:58 remaining in the period.
The Bishops still led, 49-29, after a Gerber trifecta early in the second half when Oberlin assembled a 14-1 run that included a pair of 3-pointers and a lay-in from Joshua Friedkin, narrowing the deficit to 50-43.
Gerber scored 9 straight points to close out a 14-5 burst that pushed the lead back to 16 points at 64-48, but the Yeomen countered with a 10-1 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Eli Silverman-Lloyd and Friedkin, pulling within 65-58 with 6:17 remaining, and Oberlin would remain within striking distance, with a pair of Silverman-Lloyd free throws making it a 74-68 game with 1:32 to play.
Stanislawski answered with a jumper on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, then stole the ball and drove for a lay-in. After another Oberlin turnover, Stanislawski sank a pair of free throws for an 80-68 Bishop lead with :49 left.
Gerber led the Bishops with a career-high 28 points. Stanislawski finished with 20 points, Johnson added 12 points, and junior post Tim Kiefer (North Olmsted/Cleveland St. Ignatius) matched his career best with 10 points. Junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) had a team-high 7 rebounds.
Friedkin led Oberlin with 26 points.
