Freshman post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored 8 consecutive points to cap a 12-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay and drilled a timely 3-pointer to help thwart a Denison comeback as the Bishops defeated the Big Red in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Granville.
Denison had taken an 18-14 lead on a Matt Doyle jumper with 8:16 left in the first half.
Junior post Grant Gossard (Westerville/Olentangy Orange) answered with a jumper from the lane on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, and junior post Tim Kiefer (North Olmsted/Cleveland St. Ignatius) followed with a jumper to tie the game at 18.
Carlson followed with a lay-in off a Gossard feed, then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers for a 26-18 Bishop lead with 6:00 left in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 11 points on 2 occasions, the latter coming on a 3-pointer by freshman wing Gabe Johnson (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton St. Francis) that made it 43-32 early in the second half.
The Big Red put together a 9-2 run that included a Gabe Bergeron 3-pointer and pulled within 56-55 on Matt Doyle's jumper with 3:13 to play.
Carlson buried a 3-pointer on the Bishops' next possession, and Gossard and junior guard Jaret Gerber (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) added baskets during the final minutes.
Gossard led the Bishops with 17 points, Johnson scored 15 points and had a team-high 7 boards, and Carlson and freshman wing Ethan Stanislawski (Massilon/Jackson) finished with 13 points apiece.
Doyle led Denison with 19 points.
