Case Reserve 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Junior forward Ashley Smiley (Delaware/Hayes) scored to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, but Case Reserve tallied a pair of second-half goals and went on to a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday in Cleveland.

The Spartans took the lead midway through the first half when Laura Gorjanc connected on a 35-yard shot.  Anika Washburn was credited with an assist on the play.

Ohio Wesleyan answered early in the second period.  Junior midfielder Kortney McGinnis (Grove City/Central Crossing) crossed the ball to Smiley, who lined a shot into the top right corner of the goal just under 2 minutes into the half.

Junior Emma Hall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) made 3 saves to keep the game deadlocked at 1, denying Aniya Hartzler's shot in the 49th minute and stopping back-to-back shots by Melina Peshoff in the 58th minute.

Senior forward Lexie Chafin (Powell/Olentangy Orange) had a look at the go-ahead goal, but CWRU keeper Lauren Unterborn made the stop in the 63rd minute.

Case Reserve took the lead in the 64th minute when Kimberly Chen fielded a crossing pass from Gorjanc and put a shot into the bottom right of the goal.  The Spartans added some insurance when Hartzler took a pass from Merry Meyer, dribbled in, and scored in the 74th minute.

CWRU outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 16-6.  Hall finished with 7 saves for the Bishops.  Unterborn recorded 2 saves in the Spartan goal.
