Chatham 1, Ohio Wesleyan 0
Chatham scored in the 41st minute and held off some late Ohio Wesleyan scoring threats to take a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Junior forward Ashley Smiley (Delaware/Hayes) had a good look at the Cougar goal after coming up with a loose ball inside the box in the 10th minute, but Chatham keeper Ashley Bergman tipped her shot over the crossbar.
The Cougars took the lead late in the first half when Veronica Vernail launched a shot from about 40 yards out, and the ball slipped through the hands of sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Floyd (Wilton, Conn.) after Floyd had made the initial stop.
Chatham's Morgan Anderson nearly gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with a run and shot early in the second half, but Floyd was there for the save to keep the score at 1-0.
In the 55th minute, Smiley worked free inside the Chatham penalty area and fired a shot that Bergman saved. Smiley got the offensive rebound and fired again, but Chatham defender Kelsey Calamaro was guarding the left post and blocked the shot. Smiley picked up that offensive rebound as well, but Bergman smothered Smiley's follow shot wide of the goal mouth.
The Bishops challenged numerous times during the closing minutes of play. Sophomore forward Julia Dickman (Marysville) had a shot from the top of the box saved by Bergman in the 83rd minute.
Just under 2 minutes later, the Bishops made a run into the penalty area, and a foul was called on the Cougars. Junior midfielder Kortney McGinnis (Grove City/Central Crossing) stepped to the spot but saw her kick saved by Bergman, with action continuing after the ball stayed in play. In the aftermath, Bergman appeared to stray out of the penalty area with the ball in her hands, with the Bishops awarded a free kick from just inside the top of the box, but Ohio Wesleyan was not able to take advantage of the opportunity.
Ohio Wesleyan had one more good look at the Chatham goal, with McGinnis sending the ball across to Smiley on the right side, but Bergman tracked down Smiley's shot back to the left post with 1:20 remaining in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Chatham, 22-11. Floyd made 3 saves. Bergman finished with 11 saves for the Cougars.
