Otterbein 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Junior forward Ashley Smiley (Delaware/Hayes) scored one goal and junior forward Kortney McGinnis (Grove City/Central Crossing) had a look at the equalizer in the final seconds, but 15th-ranked Otterbein held on for a non-conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops trailed, 2-0, with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation time when junior defender Caitlyn Smith (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) picked up a loose ball and sent it ahead to Smiley, who beat Cardinal keeper Erin Gordon to the ball and sent a shot from the top of the box into the back of the unprotected net.

Otterbein had a couple of chances at an insurance score, but sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Floyd (Wilton, Conn.) stopped a shot by Bella Shivley, then denied Shivley again on a shot off the offensive rebound in the 86th minute.

Ohio Wesleyan earned a corner kick in the closing seconds of regulation time, and McGinnis sent the ball toward the Otterbein goal.  The Cardinals played the ball back out toward the sideline, and McGinnis lined a shot that Cardinal defender Regina Severance headed away from the right post to close out the game.

The Cardinals had taken the lead in the 12th minute.  Gordon's punt bounced beyond midfield, then struck a Bishop defender and bounced toward the Ohio Wesleyan goal.  Otterbein's Emily Ganz picked up the ball in stride and lofted a 25-yard shot over Floyd and into the net.

Smiley and Smith each put shots on goal early in the second half, but Gordon stopped both to protect the lead.

Otterbein increased the margin to 2-0 when Ganz crossed the ball from the left side to Shively, who headed it home with 33:14 left in regulation time.

The Bishops assembled a chance in the 76th minute when sophomore forward Julia Dickman (Marysville) sent a ball up the right side that freed Smiley for a one-on-one break against Gordon, but Cardinal defender Katie Best got back and blocked the shot.  Freshman defender Isabella Geiler (Cincinnati/Mercy McAuley) put a shot on goal shortly thereafter, but Gordon tracked it down for the save.

Otterbein outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 18-12.  Floyd finished with 5 saves.  Gordon recorded 5 saves for the Cardinals.
