Ohio Wesleyan 3, Capital 1

Junior forward Ashley Smiley (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore midfielder Brooklynn Buck (Kings Mills/Kings) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 2-0 lead, and the Bishops withstood a late Capital comeback to take a non-conference win on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when junior forward Kortney McGinnis (Grove City/Central Crossing) intercepted a pass and played the ball up the right side.  Smiley ran on to the ball and fired a shot from the top corner of the penalty area that hit the left side of the Crusader net.

Capital threatened midway through the half, with Allyssa Kimbler sending a corner kick to the goal mouth only to see sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Floyd (Wilton, Conn.) punch the ball away.  In the 33rd minute, Hillary Counts broke free inside the penalty area but sent her shot outside the right post.

Smiley nearly increased the Bishop lead in the 41st minute, stealing the ball inside the penalty area, wheeling and firing a shot that Capital keeper Lauren White tracked down.

Buck made it 2-0 in the 76th minute, gathering a loose ball and getting a shot past Crusader keeper Kelly Bachmann.

The Crusaders pulled within 2-1 after drawing a foul inside the penalty area, with Kimbler converting the penalty kick with 5:35 left in regulation time.

Capital threatened again in the 86th minute when Kailey Stanisovska fielded a crossing pass but sent a shot over the goal, and the Crusaders earned a corner kick in the 89th minute but saw Maddie Peddicord's shot sail high.  Kimbler launched a long shot into the penalty area with 47 seconds to play, but Floyd made the stop.

Ohio Wesleyan got some insurance when freshman forward Riley Welsheimer (Westerville/North) tapped the ball back to junior defender Cami Lykins (Westerville/North), whose 20-yard shot found the top right corner of the Capital goal.

Capital outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 25-8.  Floyd finished with 7 saves.  White and Bachmann combined for 2 saves for the Crusaders.
