Junior forward Ashley Smiley (Delaware/Hayes) scored to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 2-1, and the Bishops had a look at the equalizer in the final minute, but John Carroll held on for a non-conference on Tuesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Smiley had the first scoring chance of the game, launching a shot from about 22 yards that Blue Streak keeper Mackenzie Stease tracked down for the save.
Sophomore midfielder Hannah Baughman (Louisville) had a look from the right side midway through the first half, but her shot hit the right post.
In the 34th minute, John Carroll's Grace Monnin teed up a shot from the top of the penalty area on which junior goalkeeper Emma Hall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) made a fine play to tip the ball over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, Jaclyn Audino tapped the ball to Casey Lindstrom, fielded the return pass and ran into the box, then found the back of the net to give the visitors the lead.
John Carroll added to its lead early in the second half when Audino converted a penalty kick after the Bishops were whistled for a hand ball in the penalty area.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 2-1 after a John Carroll foul. Junior defender Caitlyn Smith (Baltimore/Watkins Memorial) sent the ball into the penalty area, junior midfielder Caroline Elliott (Bexley) headed it on toward the goal, and Smiley finished the play from in front with 34:50 left in regulation time.
Smiley had a look at the tying goal in the 72nd minute, but Stease knocked the shot down, then scrambled to cover the loose ball. Stease also made a kick save on a drive by sophomore midfielder Olivia Adkins (Hudson) in the 83rd minute.
The Bishops generated one more chance in the closing minutes, but a header by junior defender Cami Lykins (Westerville/North) was wide with :15 remaining.
John Carroll outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 21-12. Hall stopped 9 shots in the Ohio Wesleyan goal. Stease finished with 4 saves for the Blue Streaks.
