Junior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and sophomore outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense as the Bishops swept a North Coast Athletic Conference match from Allegheny on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
The Bishops won the match by scores of 27-25, 25-17, 25-20.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair in which the biggest lead was 3 points. Ohio Wesleyan appeared ready to take the set when the Bishops broke a 21-21 tie with consecutive kills from Richardson, Murray, and freshman outside hitter Natalie Buravlov (Aurora, Colo./Grandview), but the Gators came back with kills from Cheyenne Wilson and Emma Chambers and tied the score at 24. With the score tied at 25, Buravlov came through with back-to-back kills to give Ohio Wesleyan the set.
Freshman middle hitter Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Murray each recorded consecutive kills during a 6-0 run that turned a 10-8 Bishop lead into a 16-8 margin in the second set. Richardson came through with 3 kills down the stretch and Kutilek added another kill to end the set and put the Bishops up, 2-0, in the match.
Allegheny trailed, 9-8, in the third set when the Gators got a kill and a block from India McCruter and 2 blocks by Kendall Crum during a 7-1 burst. Ohio Wesleyan pulled even at 18 with the help of 3 Buravlov kills, then got kills from Richardson and Buravlov on the way to a 22-19 lead. Kutilek, Murray, and Richardson then delivered kills in succession as the Bishops closed out the match and the set.
Richardson finished with a team-high 17 kills. Murray added 15 kills with only 2 errors in 28 attempts for a .464 attack percentage. Buravlov recorded 10 kills. Freshman setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) led the Bishops with 43 assists and 12 digs.
