Ohio Wesleyan 3, Oberlin 1

Senior midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) scored 2 goals and junior forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek) rang up the game-winner as seventh-/fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan posted a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Saturday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

The Bishops enjoyed a 13-7 advantage in shots during the first half, but could not carry that over to the scoreboard.  Ohio Wesleyan had a flurry of 3 corner kicks in a span of 90 seconds, but were able to put only a shot by freshman midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy Berlin) on goal, with Oberlin keeper Parker Whitcomb making the save.  Late in the half, Gomez and freshman midfielder Brady West (Dublin/Columbus St. Charles) put back-to-back shots on goal, but Whitcomb made both saves.

Oberlin took the lead in the 53rd minute when Alex Caceres won the ball in the middle of the field and squeezed off a shot from near the top of the penalty area that found the right side of the Bishop net.

Gomez recorded the equalizer in the 71st minute, fielding a pass from sophomore midfielder Ethan Berkovitz (Solon) and sending a shot inside the left post.

Ohio Wesleyan took the lead when sophomore back Charlie Riddle (Hilliard/Davidson) played the ball ahead to Calabrese, who finished the chance from inside the penalty area with 6:56 left in regulation time.

Gomez provided some insurance in the closing minutes, winning the ball and making a run into the penalty area, with his shot finding the net with 1:05 to play.

"This was a good comeback," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. "We were not ready to play in the first half, which was disappointing.  We have not had that problem all year.  The guys got it together and showed a little bit of urgency during the second half, and pulled it out"

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin, 32-12.  Sophomore Mason Taylor (Marysville) made 2 saves during the first half and senior Chase Agin (Blacklick/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) finished the game in goal for Ohio Wesleyan.  Whitcomb recorded 9 saves for the Yeomen.
