Volleyball Splits With Marietta, Baldwin Wallace

Junior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and freshman middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) led the Ohio Wesleyan offense as the Bishops closed out the regular season with a sweep of Marietta in non-conference play on Saturday in Marietta.

Earlier in the day, sophomore outside hitter Kaitlyn Peters (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), freshman outside hitter Natalie Buravlov (Aurora, Colo./Grandview), and sophomore outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) each recorded 13 kills, but Baldwin Wallace rallied to edge the Bishops in 5 sets.

Baldwin Wallace defeated Ohio Wesleyan by scores of 26-24, 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-10, and Ohio Wesleyan defeated Marietta by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

Baldwin Wallace had taken a 21-19 lead in the first set and extended the lead to 24-21 on a block by Isa Luciano and Allison Weiner.  The Bishops rallied to even the score at 24 with the help of a Buravlov kill, but BW's Ivy Earl recorded a kill to help the Yellow Jackets take the set.

A Solberg kill and an ace by freshman middle blocker Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) broke a 14-14 tie in the second set, and Peters and Solberg posted kills during a 5-0 run that helped the Bishops pull away for the win.  Buravlov rang up 4 consecutive kills during an 8-0 burst that turned a 7-6 lead into a 15-6 margin in the third set, with Murray contributing a pair of kills down the stretch.

Solberg came through with a kill to tie the fourth set at 10, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 7-1 run that included kills by Weiner and Earl, and Earl closed out the set with a kill as BW forced a fifth set.  Weiner had back-to-back kills as the Yellow Jackets built a 9-5 lead in the deciding set, and Cecelia Hamisch delivered kills for BW's final 3 points to finish off the match.

Peters, Buravlov, and Murray had 13 kills apiece.  Freshman setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) finished with 27 assists.  Kutilek had 5 blocks, and sophomore defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had 33 digs.

Marietta reeled off 6 straight points, including a pair of kills from Mia Silva, to break a 9-9 tie in the first set only to see Ohio Wesleyan come back with 2 kills and a block from Solberg on the way to an 18-17 lead.  Richardson then posted back-to-back kills during a 4-0 run to close out the set.

With the score tied at 20 in the second set, Peters and Solberg recorded kills and Richardson had 2 kills down the stretch to help Ohio Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead in the match. 

The Pioneers led, 20-18, after a Braya Elsea kill in the third set, but the Bishops fought back once more, with sophomore setter Abby Thierauf (Cincinnati/Milford) and Solberg teaming up on a block to even the score at 20 before Solberg and Richardson contributed kills during a final 4-0 run that sealed the set and the match.

Richardson finished with 15 kills, while Solbert added 10 kills and a team-high 6 blocks.  Thierauf had a team-high 23 assists.  Senior outside hitter Chloe Merritt (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) was credited with 14 digs.
