Denison 3, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Freshman middle hitter Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and freshman outside hitter Natalie Buravlov (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) led a balanced Ohio Wesleyan offense, but Denison recorded a win over the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in Granville.
The Big Red won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18.
Buravlov delivered a kill to help Ohio Wesleyan tie the first set at 17, but Denison reeled off the next 5 points with the help of back-to-back Sophia Sobota kills and a block from Sidney Gossard and Corinne Boyd. Sobota had 3 more kills down the stretch as the Big Red took a 1-0 lead in the match. The Big Red also pulled away late in the second set, breaking a 16-16 tie with 4 straight points that included a block by Gossard and Lucy Anderson. Daria Rodriguez added 2 kills, including the final point, to put Denison ahead, 2-0.
The third set unfolded in similar fashion, but this time it was Ohio Wesleyan that took the lead after a 17-17 tie. Buravlov delivered 3 kills during a 5-2 run that gave the Bishops a 22-19 lead, and Kutilek added a kill as Ohio Wesleyan sent the match to a fourth set.
With the score tied at 15 in the fourth set, Denison took off on a 8-1 run that included 5 kills by Rodriguez and a pair of blocks from Gossard and Boyd, and Boyd added kills for the Big Red's final 2 points of the evening.
Kutilek led the Bishops with 11 kills, Buravlov finished with 10, and junior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and sophomore outside hitter Melissa Murray (Chardon/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) added 9 apiece. Freshman setter Olivia Osuna (Orlando, Fla./Phillips) dished out 22 assists. Kutilek had a team-high 4 blocks and Murray contributed 3. Sophomore defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had a team-high 13 digs.
