Late Run Pulls Men's Basketball Past Muskingum

Freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) went 5-for-6 from the free throw line as Ohio Wesleyan broke a 79-79 tie and went on to defeat Muskingum in non-conference action on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

Muskingum had tied the game at 79 on a 3-pointer by M.J. Smith with 1:37 left in regulation time.

On the Bishops' ensuing possession, Hinkle was fouled and sank both free throws to put the Bishops ahead to stay.  Hinkle was fouled again with :23 remaining and sank both free throws for an 83-79 Bishop lead.

Smith hit a jumper from the lane to bring the Muskies within a bucket, and Hinkle was fouled immediately and sank the second of 2 free throws for an 84-81 score.

Alex Masinelli hit the first of 2 free throws with :07 left as the visitors closed to within 84-82, but missed the second and sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) cleared the rebound.  Senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) buried a pair of free throws at the :05 mark to account for the 86-82 final.

Ohio Wesleyan broke an early 9-9 deadlock with 3-pointers by junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) on the way to a 17-9 lead, and the Bishops would extend the margin to 12 points late in the first half before the Muskies narrowed the gap to 44-37 at the break.

The Muskies took the lead with a 10-0 burst early in the second half, turning a 52-46 deficit into a 56-52 lead, and Muskingum still led, 67-62, after a pair of Evan Boatwright free throws with 8:54 to go.

Carter knocked down a 3-pointer and junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) followed with a lay-in to even the score at 67, and the Bishops would go up, 75-69, on a Clement 3-pointer before Muskingum came back to knot the score at 79.

Clement led the Bishops with 21 points.  Hinkle followed with 16 points and a team-best 4 assists, Spicer scored 11 points, and Carlson had 10 points and a team-high 6 boards.

Alex Masinelli paced Muskingum with 21 points.
