Senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 10-0 first-half run that helped Ohio Wesleyan build a lead, and the Bishops weathered a Nebraska Wesleyan comeback to post a win in the consolation game of the Lee Pfund Classic, hosted by Wheaton College on Saturday in Wheaton, Ill.
The Prairie Wolves had taken a 4-3 lead on a lay-in by Connor Riekenberg when the Bishops took off on a 10-0 run that included lay-ins by junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) along with the pair of 3-pointers by White.
A 3-pointer by freshman wing Preston Crabtree (Marysville/North Union) and a pair of free throws from freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) stretched the lead into double digits, but Nebraska Wesleyan closed to within 18-13 with the help of lay-ins from Peter Lash and Jack Groeteke. It was still a 30-23 game when the Bishops closed out the half with a 15-7 burst, getting a 3-pointer from Hinkle to begin the run and one from sophomore wing Reece Mitchell (Wooster) to beat the first-half buzzer and put Ohio Wesleyan up, 45-30.
Hinkle opened the second half with a 3-pointer and White followed with a lay-in to make it a 50-30 game, and the Bishops held a 73-50 lead after a Clement jumper with 6:56 left in regulation time.
Nebraska Wesleyan narrowed the deficit with an 11-1 burst that featured a 3-point play by Riekenberg and a pair of hoops from Lash, and a dunk by Tyler Unger made it 74-61 with 4:02 remaining. A Spicer lay-in ended that run, but Carter Glenn sank back-to-back 3-pointers and Riekenberg followed with a lay-in that sliced the margin to 76-69 with 1:32 to play.
Senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) hit a lay-in to push the lead back to 9 points, and after that, the Bishops were able to seal the game at the free throw line, with Carlson and Clement each hitting a pair of free throws and Spicer splitting a pair.
Clement finished with 19 points to lead a quintet of Bishops in double digits. Spicer scored 14 points, White and Carlson finished with 12 apiece, and Hinkle added 10 points and a team-high 9 assists. Sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) grabbed a team-leading 8 boards.
Lash led Nebraska Wesleyan with 19 points.
Clement represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
