Ohio Wesleyan 81, Heidelberg 72
Senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored 8 consecutive points to close out a 10-2 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops went on to defeat Heidelberg in non-conference play on Saturday in Tiffin.
The Student Princes had taken a 61-60 lead on a lay-in by Seth Hohman midway through the second half.
Ohio Wesleyan got a jumper from junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine), a pair of free throws from Carlson, and a Carlson lay-in to make it a 66-63 game, and Carlson followed with a jumper and a pair of free throws for a 70-63 Bishop lead with 4:01 left in regulation time.
Heidelberg closed to within 70-68 after a Dylan Woods 3-pointer and a lay-in by Isaiah Young, but junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) countered with a free throw and freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) hit a pair of jumpers to push the lead back to 75-70 with :48 remaining.
The Bishops closed out the game at the free throw line, with Clement, Spicer, and Hinkle each sinking a pair of free throws during the final minute.
Ohio Wesleyan had opened the game with 3-pointers from Hinkle and senior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.), but Heidelberg came back to even the score at 9 on a Hohman lay-in. The Bishops built a 9-point lead on 2 different occasions during the first half only to see the hosts rally to tie the game at 36.
Heidelberg went on a 12-2 run early in the second half, taking a 54-49 lead on Eric Panning's dunk, but a Hinkle hoop and a 3-pointer from sophomore wing Reece Mitchell (Wooster) tied the score at 54 with 11:54 to play.
Hinkle led the Bishops with 22 points and 7 assists. Clement finished with 20 points, Carlson scored 13 points, and Spicer collected 11 points and a team-leading 8 rebounds.
Young led Heidelberg with 20 points.
