Men's Basketball Pulls Away from Kenyon

Sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) canned a 3-pointer and junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) followed with back-to-back jumpers to start off a 9-2 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops went on to a win over Kenyon in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday in Gambier.

Kenyon had evened the game at 50 on a lay-in by Dylan Fuerst with 4:58 remaining in regulation time.

Carter responded with a 3-pointer on Ohio Wesleyan's next possession, and after Miles Versa scored on a putback for Kenyon, Clement knocked down jumpers on consecutive possessions to extend the Bishop lead to 57-52.  Freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) added a jumper from the lane to make it a 59-52 lead with 2:56 to play.

Junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) hit a pair of free throws to maintain the 7-point lead with 2:31 remaining, and Clement sank another jumper from the lane for a 63-56 Bishop lead with :32 to go.

The Bishops took off on a 10-2 run midway through the first half, with Clement contributing 5 points and senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) adding a 3-pointer, to open up a 22-10 lead.  Carter's lay-in during the final seconds of the half stretched the margin to 35-22 at the break.

It was still a 13-point game when senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) drove for a lay-in to make it 48-35 at the 13:09 mark of the second half, but Kenyon scored the next 13 points of the game, with Versa contributing a 3-point play and a lay-in and Gefen Bar-Cohen adding a lay-in and a pair of free throws that tied the score at 48.

Clement hit a jumper with 5:13 to play, ending the Bishops' scoring drought of nearly 8 minutes, but Fuerst's lay-in tied the score at 50 and set up the final minutes.

Clement led the Bishops with 22 points.  Spicer scored 11 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 3 assists.  Ries grabbed a team-high 9 boards.

Versa scored 16 points for the Lords.
