Junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) scored to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then reeled off 6 straight points to help the Bishops take their biggest lead of the game on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Allegheny had evened the game at 52 on Luke Barker's lay-in with 12:00 left in regulation time.
Clement answered with a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, and after Holden Phillips split a pair of free throws to bring the Gators within 54-53, Clement sank a pair of free throws. A pair of hoops by senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) helped the Bishops stretch the margin to 62-55 with 8:53 remaining.
Brian Roberts, Jr. got hot for Allegheny, scoring on 3 straight possessions to bring the visitors within 68-65, but Clement followed with 3 buckets of his own as Ohio Wesleyan took a 74-65 lead with 2:51 to play. Roberts brought the visitors within 74-69 with a pair of hoops, but Carlson and freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) countered with baskets to move the lead back to 9 points at 78-69 with :28 left.
Ohio Wesleyan had opened the game with a lay-in by junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and a 3-pointer by Carlson, and the Bishops built a 17-10 lead on Hinkle's 3-point play with 14:02 left in the first half. The Gators rallied with a 3-ponter by Caden Hinckley and a 3-point play from Jordan Greynolds, and pulled even when Preston Turk closed the first-half scoring with a lay-in that knotted the score at 39.
The Gators took their first lead of the game on Hinckley's 3-pointer in the opening seconds of the second half, then opened up a 47-41 advantage on Andrew Wilder's 3-pointer with 16:23 left, only to see Ohio Wesleyan come back to tie the score at 50 as Clement drove for a lay-in and connected on a 3-pointer.
Clement led the Bishops with 28 points. Hinkle finished with 22 points and Carlson added 12 points. Sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds and senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) dished out 3 assists.
Roberts scored 22 points for the Gators.
