Freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored to give Ohio Wesleyan a 5-point lead, but Denison rallied for a win over the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday in Granville.
Hinkle's lay-in with 2:40 left in regulation time gave the Bishops a 68-65 lead, and after senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) stole the ball from Denison's Darren Rubin, Carlson scored on the break for a 70-65 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 2:24 remaining.
Baskets by Ricky Radtke and Will Hunter brought the hosts within 70-69 with 1:12 to play. and Kevin Cheng connected from long range for a 72-70 Big Red lead with :35 to go. Freeman Brou hit the second of 2 free throws for a 73-70 margin with :17 left.
Junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) brought the Bishops within 73-71 by hitting the first of 2 free throws with :04 left, and the Bishops fouled right away to get the ball back, but Rubin answered with a free throw for the final 3-point margin.
Junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) hit a pair of buckets as Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with an 8-3 run, and the Bishops would hold the lead for the remainder of the first half.
Clement and Spicer hit 3-pointers during a 12-2 Ohio Wesleyan second-half run that opened up a 55-40 lead with 14:08 left in regulation time, but Denison answered by scoring the next 12 points, with Brou and John Faller scoring 6 points apiece.
Ries sank a free throw to end the Bishops' 5-minute scoring drought, and Ohio Wesleyan would hold on to the lead until the final minute of play.
Spicer led the Bishops with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Hinkle scored 19 points and Clement finished with 15 points and a team-best 4 assists.
Rubin scored 13 points for the Big Red.
