2/20/2021 3:30:00 PM

Box Score
Ohio Wesleyan 58, Wittenberg 48

Sophomore guard Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) scored to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, freshman wing Ryan Sheridan (Marion/Elgin) knocked down a pair of timely 3-pointers, and junior guard Zane Ries (Barberton) and sophomore post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) provided key plays down the stretch as the Bishops closed out a win over Wittenberg on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The win completed an Ohio Wesleyan sweep of the season series, the Bishops' first sweep of the Tigers since the 2016-17 edition swept 3 meetings with Wittenberg.

The Tigers had taken a 40-39 lead on a 3-pointer by Levi Boettcher with 8:56 left in regulation time, but Clement drove for a lay-in for a 41-40 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 7:49 to go.

Sheridan buried a 3-pointer to make it a 46-41 game at the 4:32 mark, and after the visitors had closed to within 46-43 on a pair of Daniel Asher free throws, it was Sheridan again from long distance, connecting on a 3-pointer for a 49-43 Bishop lead with 3:40 to go.

Jordan Welch answered with a trifecta for Wittenberg, but that was as close as the Tigers would come.

Ries drove for a lay-in and sank a pair of free throws to extend the margin to 53-46 with 2:15 remaining.  Spicer hit a pair of free throws with :52 left, then came up with a steal on Wittenberg's next possession and was fouled going to the hoop.  A technical foul was assessed to Wittenberg's James Johnson after the play, and Clement split the technical free throws before Spicer sank both free throws on the original foul, stretching the lead to 58-48 with :40 left.

It was a one-possession game for most of the first half before Spicer drilled a 3-pointer and Clement followed with a lay-in, breaking an 18-18 tie and giving the Bishops the biggest lead of the period.  The Tigers pulled even on Boettcher's 3-pointer early in the second half, but did not retake the lead until the Boettcher 3-pointer with 8:56 to play.

Spicer led the Bishops with 14 points and 9 rebounds.  Clement finished with 12 points, Sheridan collected 11 points, and Ries scored 10 points and led Ohio Wesleyan with 5 assists.

Asher led Wittenberg with 12 points.
