DePauw Holds Off Men's Basketball Rally

2/4/2021 9:00:00 PM

Box Score
DePauw 76, Ohio Wesleyan 67

Junior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) scored 8 points and sophomore guard Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) added 7 more as Ohio Wesleyan pared a 15-point deficit to a single point, but DePauw withstood the Bishop rally and held on for a win in Ohio Wesleyan's season opener on Thursday at Branch Rickey Arena.

The game was the first intercollegiate contest since the arena's renovation was completed.  Find out more about the renovation here.

Senior wing Dawsin Tillman (Bellefontaine) put the Bishops ahead with a 3-pointer for the first points of the season, but DePauw countered with a 12-2 run that included 3 baskets by Nolan Ginther.

The Tigers extended the margin to 24-10 on Nolan Niego's lay-in with 7:34 left in the first half, and took a 27-12 lead on Nick Felke's jumper with 2:11 remaining.

Carlson hit a lay-in and Clement converted a 3-point play to bring the Bishops within 37-27 late in the half, and Clement and sophomore post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) each contributed a pair of buckets as Ohio Wesleyan pulled within 43-37 less than 5 minutes into the second half.

A Carlson 3-point play made it a 3-point game, and when freshman wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) connected on a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws and junior guard Curtis White (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) followed with a lay-in and a pair of free throws, it was a 53-52 game with 9:27 remaining in regulation time.

Ohio Wesleyan was still within 57-56 after a Carlson lay-in at the 6:27 mark, but DePauw responded with 3-pointers from Grant Niego and Felke, and Ginther followed with a lay-in to stretch the lead to 65-56 with 4:27 to go.

Clement sank a free throw and buried a 3-pointer as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 71-64 with 1:12 to play, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.

Clement led the Bishops with 16 points and 5 assists.  Carlson and Spicer added 12 points apiece, with Spicer snaring a team-high 9 rebounds, and Carter finished with 10 points in his collegiate debut.

Ginther led DePauw with 21 points.
