DePauw 35, Ohio Wesleyan 21
Freshman quarterback Austin Womack (Hurricane, W.Va.) tossed a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 28-21, but DePauw answered with a score to seal a win over the Bishops on Saturday at Selby Stadium.
The Tigers led, 28-7, after Chase Andries tossed a 3-yard scoring pass to John Major early in the fourth quarter.
Womack and the Bishops answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that saw Ohio Wesleyan convert a pair of fourth-down situations. Womack hit senior wide receiver Nick Soika (Seville/Lodi Cloverleaf) for 10 yards on a fourth-and-2 call from the DePauw 30, then found senior Michael Craider (Parma/Padua Franciscan) for 6 yards on fourth-and-6 from the Tiger 16. After a holding penalty moved the ball to the DePauw 5, Womack connected with senior running back Trey Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake), who got inside the pylon on the left side of the field for the score. Junior Gabe Philhower (Reynoldsburg) followed with the point-after to make it 28-14 with 8:49 left in regulation time.
After forcing a 3-and-out, Ohio Wesleyan got the ball back at its 26-yard line. Freshman running back T.J. Weems (Inverness, Fla./Citrus) broke loose for 15 yards and a first down, but Ohio Wesleyan soon faced another fourth-down situation. This time, Womack found junior wide receiver Kenny Streb (Willowick/Eastlake North) over the middle, and Streb broke free and sailed 55 yards to the end zone and a 28-21 score with 5:56 left.
DePauw got a key third-down conversion when Andries hit Gavin Ritter for 7 yards on third-and-5, then the Tigers picked up 19 yards on an Andries-to-Josh Major strike. Two plays later, Andries fired the ball into the end zone, where Ethan Hudson made a fine catch for a touchdown with 3:03 left, sealing the outcome.
Hudson had put the visitors on the scoreboard with a 21-yard TD reception in the first quarter, then Andries broke free on a 49-yard scoring gallop midway through the period for a 13-0 Tiger lead.
Womack drove the Bishops 67 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass to Craider, but DePauw responded with an 11-play drive of its own, capped by a 7-yard run from Will Schmidt that helped the Tigers to a 21-7 lead at the half.
Womack completed 22 of 40 passes for 278 yards and 3 scores. Craider caught 8 passes for 111 yards. Dixon led the Bishops with 26 yards on 10 rushes.
Senior linebacker Shane Quin (Chardon) led Ohio Wesleyan with 10 stops, including 2 for loss, and picked off a DePauw pass. Senior linebacker Lucas Cooper (Hurricane, W.Va.) contributed 9 tackles.
Andries completed 13 of 26 throws for 153 yards and 3 touchdowns. Major caught 5 passes for 62 yards. Schmidt and Andries each rushed for 71 yards for the Tigers. Charlie Gruner led the DePauw defense with 6 tackles.
