Ohio Wesleyan 52, Wooster 38
Senior running back Trey Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns as Ohio Wesleyan erased a 38-35 deficit and scored the final 17 points of the game to take a win over Wooster on Friday in Wooster.
The Fighting Scots had taken a 38-35 lead on a 2-yard run by Mateo Renteria less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan retook the lead with a 63-yard, 7-play drive that used up just 1:29, getting a 12-yard strike from junior quarterback Zane Ries (Barberton) to junior wide receiver Kenny Streb (Willowick/Eastlake North) before a 43-yard connection from Ries to Dixon moved the ball to the Wooster 2-yard line. Two plays later, Dixon was in the end zone and the Bishops had the lead, and junior kicker Gabe Philhower (Reynoldsburg) followed with the conversion to make it 42-38.
Wooster's next possession ended with a fumble that Ohio Wesleyan recovered on the Fighting Scot 4-yard line, and Dixon scored on the first play from scrimmage. Philhower made the point-after for a 49-38 Bishop lead, and he connected on a 32-yard field goal in the waning minutes to account for the 52-38 final.
The Bishops opened the scoring with a 25-yard play from Ries to senior wide receiver Nick Soika (Seville/Lodi Cloverleaf), but Wooster's Troy Baughman broke loose on a 76-yard scoring run on the Scots' first play from scrimmage.
Freshman running back T.J. Weems (Inverness, Fla./Citrus) went over from 2 yards out and Ries found freshman tight end Hunter Swetokos (East Lake, Fla.) on a 6-yard scoring play as Ohio Wesleyan moved to a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Weems would score on a 6-yard run and a 1-yard run, but Wooster responded with a score each time. Renteria had an 11-yard TD run in the third quarter and the 2-yard scoring plunge early in the fourth period that gave Wooster its 38-35 lead.
Ries completed 29 of 37 passes for 324 yards and 2 scores. Freshman wide receiver Jerrol Hines (Covington, Ga./Newton) caught 9 passes for 134 yards. Dixon led the Bishops with 111 yards on 21 carries.
Senior linebacker Shane Quin (Chardon) led Ohio Wesleyan with 12 tackles, including half a sack.
