Men's Soccer Blanks Wittenberg in Exhibition

4/28/2021 10:00:00 PM

Ohio Wesleyan 3, Wittenberg 0 (exhibition)

Junior midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) set up all 3 Ohio Wesleyan goals as the Bishops defeated Wittenberg in an exhibition game on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Wittenberg's Alex Zysik had the first scoring chance of the game, uncorking a hard shot that sophomore Asher Rose (Westerville/South) stopped near the left post.

The Bishops had better luck on their first chance of the game.  Hector Gomez played the ball ahead to sophomore midfielder Cristian Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales), who centered to junior forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek), whose shot to the left side found the back of the net.

Hector Gomez set up Ohio Wesleyan's second goal in similar fashion, centering the ball to Calabrese, who played it on to freshman forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty).  Brooker's shot through a crowd snuck inside the left post in the 66th minute.

Freshman midfielder Zach Jasper (Hilliard/Darby) made it 3-0 in the 76th minute, fielding a crossing pass from Hector Gomez and converting the chance.

Hector Gomez finished with 3 assists, the first Bishop to record 3 assists in a game since Oct. 8, 2016, when Kyle Baum had 3 at Wittenberg.

"I was pleased with the fact that we have gotten better in each game," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin.  "I was pleased with our defending and our depth.  We have a good freshman class and a good sophomore class.  We still have some areas to improve, but I think we could be really competitive next fall."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Wittenberg, 25-10.

Rose made 1 save during the first 29-plus minutes in goal, junior Chase Agin (Blacklick/Columbus St. Francis DeSales) had 3 saves during the next 31-plus minutes, and freshman Mason Taylor (Marysville) stopped 1 shot during the final 29-plus minutes.

Cooper Robertson recorded 9 saves for the Tigers.
