Brooker's 2 Goals Help 13th-Ranked Bishops Past Muskingum

9/10/2021 10:00:00 PM

Box Score
Ohio Wesleyan 3, Muskingum 1

Sophomore forward Jaggar Brooker (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) scored twice as 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan erased a 1-0 deficit and went on to defeat Muskingum in a first-round matchup of the Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational on Friday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

In Friday's other first-round game, Kenyon defeated Grove City by a 3-0 count.  The Fred Myers/adidas® Invitational concludes on Saturday evening, when Ohio Wesleyan hosts Grove City at 7 p.m.

Muskingum had taken a 1-0 lead when Noah Mueller sent a long ball ahead into the penalty area and Blake Weatherholt directed it into the goal.

The Bishops responded just over 2 minutes later as Brooker wound up for a shot from the left side, but his shot hit the left post.  Sophomore midfielder Ethan Berkovitz (Solon) sent the rebound back out to Brooker, whose second shot was true at the 16:07 mark.

Muskie goalkeeper Jacob Clevenger made some saves to preserve the tie, first on a drive by freshman midfielder Brady West (Dublin/Columbus St. Charles) midway through the half and then on a header by sophomore back Charlie Riddle (Hilliard/Davidson) after a corner kick in the 32nd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mason Taylor (Marysville) turned aside a shot by Edwin Palou late in the period, then saw a follow shot by Michael Castaneda hit the post.

Brooker put the Bishops ahead to stay in the 64th minute.  West fired a shot from the left side that Clevenger stopped, but Brooker was there to score on the putback.

Junior forward Dom Calabrese (Beavercreek) provided some insurance with a goal in the 74th minute, fielding a crossing pass from junior forward Will Harr (Pickerington/North) and finishing the chance in front.

"We played a terrible first half," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin, "but after halftime we brought a little more energy and a little more focus, we got the momentum, and we took care of it.  Jaggar played well, Cristian Gomez played really well, Harr got some things going, (Dominic) Calabrese brought some energy, and Ethan Berkovitz played very, very well."

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Muskingum, 32-8.  Taylor stopped 2 shots for the Bishops, and Clevenger finished with 13 saves for Muskingum.
