Junior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) led the Ohio Wesleyan attack with 18 kills, but Albion defeated the Bishops during the first day of the Battle at the Point, hosted by the North Coast Athletic Conference at Cedar Point in Sandusky.
Albion won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17.
The Britons broke a 17-17 tie with 3 straight points, 2 of them kills by Chloe Webber, then got back-to-back kills from Olivia Alexander down the stretch to take the first set. Albion opened the second set with a 5-0 run, getting 3 service aces from Kameron Haley, and opened up an 18-7 lead. Ohio Wesleyan assembled a furious comeback, with Richardson collecting 3 kills during a 6-0 run, then closing another burst with a kill to bring the Bishops within 21-17, but Albion bounced back to post the final 4 points of the set.
Ohio Wesleyan broke an 11-11 tie with a 6-2 run in the third set, with freshman middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) and Richardson each recording 2 kills, and senior outside hitter Paige Hale (McHenry, Ill./West) got the final point to bring the Bishops within 2-1 in the match. Solberg then had a kill to give Ohio Wesleyan a 4-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Britons answered with an 8-0 run that included 2 kills apiece from Kaylynne Nicholson and Webber and went on to close out the match.
Richardson led the Bishops with 18 kills. Sophomore setter Abby Thierauf (Cincinnati/Milford) posted 40 assists. Solberg and freshman middle hitter Ava Kutilek (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had 3 blocks apiece. Sophomore defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had 22 digs.
