Ohio Wesleyan faced a pair of top-10 opponents during the second day of the Battle at the Point, hosted by the North Coast Athletic Conference at Cedar Point in Sandusky.
In the first match of the day, Ohio Wesleyan took the first set from eighth-ranked Calvin, but the Knights rallied to win by scores of 23-25, 28-26, 25-11, 25-19. The nightcap saw seventh-ranked Hope record a 25-12, 25-16, 25-11 win over the Bishops.
The Bishops got kills from junior outside hitter Eliza Richardson (Lakewood) and sophomore defensive specialist Neah White (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) during a 4-0 run that broke an 18-18 tie in the first set against Calvin, and Richardson and senior outside hitter Hannah Williams (Columbus/Bishop Ready) ended the set with kills after the Knights came back to tie the score at 23.
In the second set, Richardson came through with back-to-back kills as Ohio Wesleyan broke a 22-22 tie and was serving for the set, but Tori Roskamp and Maria Bos came through with a block for Calvin to keep the match going, and Bos and Gabriella Kellogg recorded kills to help Calvin take the set and even the match at a set apiece. Calvin used an 8-0 run to take the lead for good in the third set, getting 2 kills from Kellogg and a kill and an ace by Heidi Westra along the way, and the Knights held off a Bishop comeback in the fourth set, as senior outside hitter Paige Hale (McHenry, Ill./West) and Richardson contributed kills that helped the Bishops pare a 9-point deficit to 23-19 before Calvin got the final 2 points to end the match.
Richardson led the Bishops with 16 kills, while freshman middle blocker Claire Solberg (Huron) had 10 kills and a team-high 6 blocks. Sophomore setter Abby Thierauf (Cincinnati/Milford) collected 42 assists and senior outside hitter Chloe Merritt (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) had a team-high 17 digs.
Against Hope, Richardson had a team-high 6 kills. Thierauf dished out 16 assists, Solberg racked up 3 blocks, and White led the defense with 9 digs.
