Ohio Wesleyan 2, Ohio Northern 0
Senior midfielder Hector Gomez (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) and freshman midfielder Drew Doza (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) scored goals to give 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan a non-conference win over Ohio Northern on Wednesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Gomez staked the Bishops to a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute after drawing a foul inside the penalty area. Gomez stepped to the spot and converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Later in the first half, Gomez lured Polar Bear keeper John Lombardo out of the goal, then slipped the ball over to freshman midfielder Landon Kuhn (Lewis Center/Olentangy Berlin), but Kuhn's shot was cleared off the goal line by an Ohio Northern defender.
Ohio Wesleyan added some insurance in the 77th minute when freshman midfielder Brady West (Dublin/Columbus St. Charles) sent the ball from the left end line across to Doza, who tucked it inside the right post.
"This was a really good win against a decent team," said Bishop head coach Jay Martin, "I thought it was a total team effort. Cristian Gomez was outstanding tonight, and Landon coming in off the bench was great. All of our subs contributed. Our goal going in was to take another step toward being a team, and I think we did that."
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Ohio Northern, 28-5. Sophomore Mason Taylor (Marysville) had 2 saves for Ohio Wesleyan, and Lombardo finished with 4 saves for the Polar Bears.
