Ohio Wesleyan 70, DePauw 63
Freshman wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan) contributed 5 points during an 8-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over DePauw on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.
DePauw had taken a 41-40 lead on a 3-pointer by Grant Niego with 13:00 left in regulation time.
Rice scored on the fast break to put the Bishops up for good, and after a 3-pointer by freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), Rice converted a 3-point play for a 48-41 Ohio Wesleyan lead with 11:06 to play.
The Tigers pulled to within 48-46 with a Ronald Johnson 3-pointer and a pair of Niego free throws, but the Bishops responded with a jumper by freshman wing Preston Crabtree (Marysville/North Union) and a 3-pointer from junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) to go up, 53-46, with 7:03 left.
From there, the Tigers remained within striking distance but were never able to get close enough to make it a one-possession game, with Ohio Wesleyan maintaining a lead of at least 4 points the rest of the way.
DePauw raced to a 14-4 lead behind a barrage of 3-pointers, with Nolan Niego connecting twice and Nick Wissel and Elijah Hales adding long-range hoops.
Ohio Wesleyan evened the game with a 10-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) and hoops from Clement and Rice, and the Bishops moved to a 25-21 lead as Crabtree converted a 3-point play and junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) hit from downtown.
The Tigers countered with a 9-0 burst to close out the first half, capped by a Wissel 3-pointer, to take a 30-25 lead at the break, but 3-pointers by senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) and Clement early in the second half brought the Bishops back and set up the closing minutes..
Clement led the Bishops with 18 points. Rice scored 14 points, Hinkle added 10 points, and Carter grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds.
Hales and Grant Niego scored 18 points to lead DePauw.
