Ohio Wesleyan 76, Denison 65
Junior wing Jack Clement (Bellefontaine) tallied 7 points during a game-opening 13-2 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Denison on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Clement opened the day's scoring with a jumper off the break, and hoops by junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) and senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) made it 6-0. Denison got on the board with a John Faller lay-in, but the Bishops responded with a lay-in by freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and a jumper and a 3-pointer by Clement for a 13-2 lead with 14:22 left in the half.
The Big Red rallied with a 14-5 run later in the half, highlighted by a pair of hoops from Freeman Brou and a pair of 3-pointers by Darren Rubin that brought the visitors within 25-22.
Ohio Wesleyan answered by scoring the final 11 points of the half, with Clement scoring 6 points and Carlson knocking down a 3-pointer, to help the Bishops to a 36-22 lead at the intermission.
Carlson and Clement connected on 3-pointers to give the Bishops their biggest lead of the game at 47-29 early in the second half, and it was still a 12-point game when sophomore wing Tony Carter (Cleveland/Parma Heights Holy Name) connected from long range to make it 67-55 with 4:31 left in regulation time.
Denison got trifectas from Rubin and Scott Dean in a span of less than a minute to pull within 67-61, but again Ohio Wesleyan had an answer, scoring the next 7 points on a Clement jumper, another Carter 3-pointer, and a lay-in by Hinkle to stretch the lead to 74-61 with just over a minute to play.
Clement led the Bishops with 22 points. Carlson finished with 13 points, Spicer scored 12 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds and 4 assists, Carter grabbed 7 rebounds, and Hinkle added 4 assists.
Rubin scored 13 points for Denison.
