Senior post Nick Carlson (Dublin/Coffman) sank a pair of 3-pointers during a second-half run that opened up a double-digit lead, and Ohio Wesleyan held off a Hiram comeback to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday in Hiram.
Freshman guard Henry Hinkle (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) hit a 3-pointer to break a 40-40 tie and put the Bishops ahead to stay, and Ohio Wesleyan extended the lead to 57-49 with lay-ins by freshman wing David Rice (Brook Park/Parma Padua Franciscan) and junior post Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East).
Hiram narrowed the deficit to 57-54 on a jumper by Kevin Beans Jr., and the Terriers had a chance to tie when Doug Sartain drove for a lay-in and was fouled, but Sartain missed the free throw and the game remained 57-56.
The hosts were still within 61-58 when Carlson connected from long range, and on Ohio Wesleyan's following possession, it was Carlson from downtown again to extend the lead to 67-58 with 11:21 to go. Senior wing Zane Ries (Barberton) drove for a lay-in to push the lead into double figures, and sophomore wing Reece Mitchell (Wooster) hit a 3-pointer to give the Bishops their biggest lead of the game at 74-61 with 8:39 left in regulation time.
Ohio Wesleyan still led by a dozen after a Spicer lay-in made it 79-67 with 7:17 left, but the Terriers rallied with a lay-in by Beans and 3-pointers by Brodgie Gordon and Surtain to pull within 79-75, and a 3-pointer by Chance Wells made it an 85-82 game with :32 left.
Rice answered with a lay-in with :19 left to make it a 2-possession game, then sank a pair of free throws with :09 to play to seal the outcome.
The Terriers took an early 18-8 lead as Gordon connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Oliver Clingain added a trifecta. Hiram still led, 32-22, with 11:48 left in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan scored the next 8 points as Spicer collected a free throw and a lay-in before sophomore wing Ryan Sheridan (Marion/Elgin) hit a 3-pointer and a lay-in. Ries tied the game at 36 with a lay-in at the 3:32 mark, then Spicer stole the ball and fed freshman wing Preston Crabtree (Marysville/North Union) for a lay-in that gave the Bishops their first lead of the game.
Carlson led the Bishops with 22 points. Spicer scored 13 points and led the team with 13 boards, Hinkle had 12 points and a team-high 5 assists, and Rice finished with 10 points.
Beans led Hiram with 18 points.
